Wednesday: Security Training

How can you keep safe as an LGBTQ+ activist? This training course will help you to prevent unauthorised access, to keep you safer in your campaigns work

Prepare to be entertained and inspired!

What is this session about?

In this session we are going to take an intersectional look at “Preventing Unauthorised Access”. The aim of the sessions is to look at who we are and how we go about creating physical and political barriers that prevent people accessing the people and the information we most want to protect. We will work through tools that help us to identify steps in the process and you will get to practice as a group employing those tools. In each session, as a group we will learn from each other what strategies have been tried and what worked. By the end of the short session everyone, its hoped, will feel more confident about their approaches to risk management and security planning.

This session is aimed particularly at activists from the Global South, however, all are welcome if involved in LGBTQ+ activism.

Who is Shaun Martinez?

Shaun Martinez is a security risk management consultant at Open Briefing. Shaun has over 20 years’ experience working on the safety and security of human rights defenders and activists and supporting the victims of human rights violations. He has a keen interest in the rights of marginalised defenders and activists, including LGBTIQ+ activists, sex workers, women’s rights activists, and disability rights activists, and where these discriminations intersect with race and poverty to create even greater challenges. Shaun has worked with organisations across Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. He has worked for the UN, the EU, and the International Commission of Jurists. And he has provided international protective accompaniment to human rights defenders in Colombia and Nepal with Peace Brigades International. At present shaun is working on the security specifics for trans and non-binary folxs as rights get rolled back and democracies lapse.

Who are open briefing?

Open Briefing is about a just and equitable world where communities and ecosystems can thrive is possible. But social injustice, democratic backsliding, and the climate crisis threaten us all. The courageous people and communities daring to speak out face attacks and reprisals from powerful vested interests. Many pay the ultimate price.

Open Briefing is a vital part of the response. We build resistance and resilience among the people and communities challenging power. And we are answering more calls for assistance across more countries than ever before. Last year, our international team provided over 4,600 hours of holistic security support to activists and advocates under threat of physical, digital, and psychological harm across 93 countries.

Alongside this local support, we provide consultancy and training to help non-profits and foundations take the right risks when supporting and resourcing grassroots change. We enhance their risk management, data protection, and staff care, and help better protect their grantees and local partners.
